Alleged Bondi Beach Shooters Acted Alone and Did Not Training in the Southeast Asian Nation, Authorities State.

The pair of accused attackers who carried out the fatal attack at a Jewish celebration on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, are believed to have acted alone, according to Australian authorities.

Authorities additionally revealed that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, 24, flew to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included landing in the main city Manila before traveling onward on the day of arrival to Davao City. The duo flew back to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Preparation During Trip

Authorities assert the pair did not undergo any type of terrorist coaching or "planning" during their stay in the Philippines. Early findings from local authorities suggest they "rarely left" their hotel.

The attack—described as Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996—has been formally declared a terrorist incident.

"We are actively reviewing the material," the commissioner stated, noting that preliminary evaluations indicate that "these individuals are believed to have been lone actors."

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett told reporters on Tuesday that surveillance material documenting the accused attackers' whereabouts in the Philippines had been submitted to domestic authorities.

"There is little to no indication to indicate these alleged offenders were affiliated with a larger terrorist cell, or were acting on orders from overseas entities to execute an attack," the police chief said.

Yet, the pair were additionally not necessarily in the Philippines as tourists, she noted. She stressed that, as the inquiry is continuing, new evidence may emerge.

Inspiration and Court Charges

In prior statements, Australian leader Anthony Albanese remarked it seems both alleged attackers were "inspired by the so-called Islamic State" extremist views.

During the shooting, Sajid Akram was killed by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying firearms—allegedly shot attendees at the Hanukkah celebration.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the shooting, has been charged with 59 crimes. These include 15 counts of murder and one count of carrying out a act of terrorism. He is expected to face court in April.

In the wake following the attack, border authorities in the Philippines reported that the older suspect had arrived in the country using an Indian passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.

The pair had declared the metropolis of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their booked journey back to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a large city on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary southern island. It is noted that, Militant militants have been known to operate in poorer parts of central and south-western Mindanao.
