Confidential DNA Analysis Verified Alleged Stalker Was Not Madeleine McCann, States Officer
An accused stalker who insisted to be Madeleine McCann was excluded after a confidential DNA test definitively confirmed she was not the long-lost child, authorities disclosed in court.
Stalking Allegations Targeting McCann Family
Julia Wandelt, aged 24, faces charges for a pattern of threatening behavior against the relatives of Madeleine, who went missing from a holiday destination in Portugal in 2007 at the age of three.
The woman from Poland flooded Kate and Gerry McCann and their grown-up kids, Sean and Amelie, with numerous phone calls, messages, voicemails and letters between 2022 and earlier this year, and appeared at their home insisting on a DNA test, Leicester crown court previously heard.
Investigation Details
Providing testimony on Tuesday, the chief investigator on Madeleine's disappearance, explained he had deviated from protocol to test Wandelt “intending she may stop her conduct towards the McCann family”.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cramwell said over a dozen persons had previously claimed to be Madeleine McCann but that: “We would not take DNA without strong belief that person was Madeleine because I wished to avoid setting a precedent.
“If it became known in the media I had taken DNA off an individual probably not to be Madeleine, I was worried I would have had many persons coming forward saying ‘I’m Madeleine’.
“I genuinely have major concerns about approaching the family to say I aim to take DNA from an individual – that could have raised their hopes. It could have been quite emotionally damaging and hard for the family.”
DNA Comparison
He said the police had previously assessed Wandelt not to be Madeleine due to no physical similarity and that she was not the same age than the missing girl. But, he said, after discovering Leicester police planned to arrest Wandelt on stalking charges, he “decided that the DNA would be taken when she was apprehended”.
He declared: “A comparison took place. It absolutely confirmed that Julia Wandelt is definitely not Madeleine McCann.”
Legal Testimony
Proceedings revealed that in April this year, the detective saw Wandelt while detained and stated to her that her DNA had been compared to Madeleine’s and that the samples did not match. The jury heard he told Wandelt during the visit: “You are not Madeleine McCann.”
Testimony indicated that while they spoke, Wandelt asked: “Do you really want to find Madeleine?”, and the detective told the jury he answered: “Yes.”
He said despite the test, he believed Wandelt “could allege we have interfered with the sample”, adding: “There existed a chance she would never accept she cannot be Madeleine notwithstanding scientific proof.”
Psychological Toll
In prior court sessions, the court heard how the family were left scared and distressed by their “unnerving” and “deeply disturbing” interactions with Wandelt and the other accused Karen Spragg, 61, from Cardiff, as the two women attempted to push for a DNA test.
Jurors heard how the pair made “increasingly bizarre plans” to obtain Kate McCann’s DNA, which included rummaging in the McCanns’ bins and stealing utensils from restaurants that the family visited.
Both defendants both deny one count of stalking. The case remains active.
