Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.

The Recording That Triggered the Controversy

The clip, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in armed forces or defense roles.

"As we did, you all took an vow to defend and defend this national charter," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you must reject improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that break the law or our national charter."

The Former President's Incensed Reaction

The video message seemed to provoke a furious reply from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another message, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives Answer

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats published a unified announcement censuring the remarks.

"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our nation with great patriotism and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the protection of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these radical online messages and recant his aggressive language before he causes harm," the announcement continued.

Officials' Strong Answer

The representatives who participated in the video also issued a statement.

"We serve as veterans and national security professionals who care for this nation and took an vow to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental obligation."

"What's most telling is that the president deems it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and duty to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "All citizens must unite and censure the former president's calls for our execution and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."

Additional Governmental Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is calling for the death of public representatives."

He added: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this right away and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in US history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the representative said. "There are active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the commander in chief's proper directives."

She said: "The integrity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
