Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
