Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days After Budapest Talks Announced
There are "no plans" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.
Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the ongoing hostilities.
A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".
The White House withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.
Earlier Events
The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Some reports claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders claiming Trump had urged him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.
Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the conflict on the present positions.
"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back against halting the current line of contact.
The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov said on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.
Political Perspectives
The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat said, using Moscow's terminology for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its European partners.
Zelensky commented talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.
He also said the only topic that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Strategic Factors
The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday occurred before rumors that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the missiles had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
