Resurgent Medvedev Secures First Trophy in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been won on hard surfaces
A comeback Medvedev secured his first championship for over two years with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
Medvedev, a former number one, has endured a torrid period, winning just one match at the major tournaments and experiencing a difficult moment at the US Open.
Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in especial - resulted in him falling of the top ten and finally parting ways with long-time coach his previous coach.
Currently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought three-set triumph over challenger Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's maiden title since the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt from March of 2023.
Success also indicates Medvedev has won 21 victories at twenty-one distinct tournaments.
"For the first time I'm at a competition with my both daughters together, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," stated world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This victory is in honour of my child Victoria, because the first title I won when my child my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the past champion, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament in the past months.
Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and frequent emotional displays on court had caused observers to wonder if his skill to play at the elite level was over.
Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, making an effort to advance forward and perform positively, reinforced by an better service.
The champion recovered from a deficit in the first set against the difficult Frenchman, winning 4 of the final five games to gain the advantage.
The pair exchanged break points in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden tour title, seized the initiative to create a third set.
He defended 4 early-game opportunities in a tight third set before the Russian won the break to that score to close out the victory.
Appropriately, the winner secured the title with a rally at the net, with Moutet failing to manage a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
