Senegal's Emerging Star Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Goals
At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
