The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, did not confirm he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, it will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Campaign Controversy
During his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he hails from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his humble Astoria home.
With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
