The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
