The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
