A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event.
